The Mystery of Providence
John Flavel
First published in 1678, this little work well illustrates and explains the purpose of God for his people. Do we believe that everything in the world and in our own lives down to the minutest details is ordered by the providence of God? Do we ever take time to observe and meditate on the workings of providence?
It should be a delight and pleasure to us to discern how God works all things in the world for His own Glory and His people’s good. Considered by many to be THE classic work on Providence.

My voice shalt Thou hear in the morning, O Lord!
in the morning will I direct my prayer
unto Thee, and will look up.”
Psalm 5:3
Sweet thought to encourage my soul this morning, that my God in Christ is a prayer-quickening, a prayer-hearing, and a prayer-answering God. Are you dull, dead, lifeless? One look from Jesus, one influence of the Spirit, will kindle desire and lead you to the mercy-seat, and to the throne of grace. Jesus will do more in one moment to call off your wandering thoughts, to open to your views His glory, and to reveal to you what your needs are, and to give you a spirit of prayer suited to your needs and His praise, than all your labored attempts can do for you forever, when you are without an eye to Jesus.
When is it, my soul, that prayer is ever a burden, except because we have lost a sight of Jesus? Why is it that you are at times so little affected with the remains of indwelling corruption, and can neither rightly value God’s mercies, or be humbled under your own infirmities? Is it not because you do not look up and behold Jesus in His priestly vesture, waiting to be gracious? O if you would only eye your God and Savior under this blessed character, how you would feel the preciousness of His great salvation, and hasten to unload yourself upon the Lord Christ, and cast all your burden of coldness, deadness, and sin upon Him who is mighty to save!
Come, Lord, I pray to You, with all Your sweet influences, fill my mouth with Your words, and warm my heart with Your love. I know, Lord, I will surely speed this day, this morning, at Your mercy-seat, the moment You have loosed my tongue, and enlarged my heart with Your grace.

Who is Jesus?
The Lord asked His disciples that same question in Matthew 16:15. He said, “Who do you say that I am?” Your answer to that question determines your eternal destiny. The Bible gives us a very emphatic answer to that question. In no uncertain terms, the Bible proclaims that Jesus Christ is God. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Speaking of Christ here as “the Word,” the Bible tells us that Christ was and is, God. In John 10:30 Jesus claimed fully equality with God the Father when He said, “I and the Father are one.” Continue reading

Hell is populated with the victims of harmless amusements!
Will men never learn, that the way to Hell is through the Valley of Deceit!
When Satan approaches to charm us, it is not as a grim fiend, gleaming from a ghastly cloud — but as an angel of light, radiant with innocence. His words fall like dew upon the flower — as musical as the crystal-drop warbling from a fountain. Beguiled by his deceits, he leads you to theenchanted ground.
Oh you, who have thought that the way to Hell was . . .
as bleak and frozen as the Arctic,
as parched and barren as the Sahara,
strewed like Golgotha with bones and skulls,
reeking with stench like the valley of Gehenna
— witness your mistake! The way to Hell looks pleasant! It is a broad highway. The enchanted victim travels on. Startled for a moment, the victim pauses; gazes around upon the flowery scene, and whispers, Is it not harmless? "Harmless," responds a serpent from the grass!
You who are meddling with the edges of vice, you are on this road — and utterly duped by its enchantments! The leprosy is all over you — its blotches and eruptions cover you! Your feet stand on slippery places, whence in due time they shall slide, if you refuse the warning which I raise. They shall slide down to that fiery abyss below you, out of which none ever come!

The Eyes of Natural Men
The souls of natural men are so blinded that they see no beauty or excellency in Christ. They do not see his sufficiency. They see no beauty in the work of salvation by him; and as long as they remain thus blind, it is impossible that they should close with Christ. The heart will never be drawn to an unknown Saviour. It is impossible that a man should love that, and freely choose that, and rejoice in that, in which he sees no excellency.
But if your eyes were opened to see the excellency of Christ, the work would be done. You would immediately believe on him; and you would find your heart going after him. It would be impossible to keep it back. But take heed that you do not entertain a wrong notion of what it is, spiritually to see Christ. If you do, you may seek that which God never bestows.
Do not think that spiritually to see Christ, is to have a vision of him as the prophets had, to see him in some bodily shape, to see the features of his countenance. Do not pray or seek for any such thing as this. But what you are to seek is, that you may have a sight of the glorious excellency of Christ, and of the way of salvation through him, in your heart. This is a spiritual sight of Christ. This is that for which you must cry to God day and night. God is the fountain of spiritual light. He opens the eyes of the blind. He commands the light to shine out of darkness. It is easy with God to enlighten the soul, and fill it with these glorious discoveries, though it is beyond the power of men and angels.
